TidBits 109: Once upon a time…

Cheong-ah Hwang’s paper fairy tales.

Cheong-ah Hwang is a Korean artist who creates illustrations starting from her original drawings that she then turns into paper sculptures. She carefully cuts each piece of paper, positions it in relief, makes holes in it, attentively tears it and then assembles the pieces together. She cuts and layers every detail to give form and volume to the object she is creating.

And so classic fairy tale characters like Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf, The Beauty and the Beast, Alice in Wonderland and many others come to life!

Her passion comes from back when she was a little girl. In her family’s printing works she didn’t have many toys to play with. So she began making figures and landscapes with the only means she had readily available.

“Real-life” fairy tales from a simple piece of paper.
