Cheap-Chic-Weddings.com is an Internet site dedicated to weddings and helps future brides plan for and organize the big day without spending the savings of a lifetime. Each year, this site organizes a paper wedding dress contest, and this year, it has reached its 5th edition!
The contest began from this website and has attained great success: 700 participants in 2009 and a great many innovative creations presented every year. The idea of this contest is inspired by a game played at American bridal showers where the guests create a dress made of toilet paper that should make the bride look even more beautiful! This year’s winner made an incredible wedding dress using 15 rolls of toilet paper, demonstrating that this material, too, can constitute an ideal “fabric” in a period of economic recession! And then a little ribbon, glue and lots of work for a total cost of... 24 dollars!

Ann Kagawa Lee, a retired attorney, says she prefers to work with “normal” materials such as satin or silk and that working with toilet paper is very difficult because it tears easily. She used 760 pieces of paper to create the bodice for Erica Lee’s custom-made dress (see photo). Ann Kagawa Lee’s creation is so rich and full of details that it has been compared to Oscar de la Renta’s haute couture models. According to the Internet site, the dress is strongly inspired on the one hand by “Gone with the Wind” and on the other by Japanese origami. The matching hat in full “southern” style is really a sensational object! Ann Kagawa Leewon a pre-paid card worth 1,000 dollars and her dress has won a place for itself in one of Ripley's Believe It Or Not! museums in Florida, USA.
