TidBits 103: Cascades of books

What is a book? An object that tells stories, spurs reflections, entertains. But for Alicia Martins it's something much more...

The Spanish artist uses old books to create sculptures, imposing installations that capture the attention of anyone passing by. Thousands of books with their pages swaying in the wind explode from the windows of buildings and reach down to touch the streets like veritable cascades. The installations she created in Madrid are made up of about 5000 books held in place by a metal structure covered in a steel net. Alicia's passion for books is so strong that she makes them protagonists of her works in a visible invitation to read and not to let them collect dust in bookstores!
